DPP approves murder charges against Rose Mulwa, her children and two officers in lawyer Kyalo Mbolu case

The Director of Public Prosecutions has formally charged five individuals with murder in connection to the killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. The suspects include politician Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her two children Chris and Angela, and two police officers, Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei Borboroi. Cheruiyot and Borboroi appeared before Justice Diana Kavedza at Nairobi's High Court on Thursday, but failed to enter a plea.

The court ordered the two officers undergo a mental evaluation at Mbagathi Hospital. Kavedza also directed the retrieval of Mbithe, Mulwa and one of Mulwa's children, all of whom are being held at various prisons. The four are separately charged with the murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso. Mbobu, a respected lawyer, university professor and author, was allegedly ambushed and killed on September 9, 2025 in Nairobi.

Mbobu had represented Dr. Mutiso's husband, Prof David Ndetei, in legal matters. Dr. Mutiso, a former director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was shot dead on July 29, 2026 in Upper Hill, Nairobi. The case has been linked to a land dispute involving Dr. Mutiso, specifically over land registration number 1504/13, which is currently under consideration by a court in Machakos.

Police Inspector Kenneth Sang, who has not yet been apprehended, is alleged to have orchestrated the attack with the help of Mbithe, who is already in police custody for the murder of Dr. Mutiso.
