Britain renames East Jerusalem to 'U.K. Mission, Jerusalem' consulate after Israel announces closure

The building will retain its independence and operational status under a new name, "UK mission, Jerusalem," continuing to serve Palestinians in Jerusalem and the wider occupied territories.

The announcement followed the removal of signs and plaques identifying the building as the British consulate general, although the British flag remained flying. The dispute arose after Britain imposed sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Mr. Miliband stated that his government is committed to preserving its diplomatic presence for Palestinians while avoiding further conflict with Israel.

The consulate deals with Britain's relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza, and provides consular services to Palestinians. Israel maintains the settlements are illegal under international law, a claim the UK and most countries dispute. Miliband also rejected speculation of reciprocal actions, such as expelling Israeli diplomats, while discussions were ongoing.
