BMW’s Neue Klasse era expands further with all-new iX4

BMW South Africa is yet to approve the iX4 for the local market.

BMW’s Neue Klasse era expands further with all-new iX4

BMW has unveiled its latest addition to the Neue Klasse lineup, the iX4 electric SUV. Successor to the iX3 and positioned between it and the iX5, the iX4 aims to bridge the gap between the two. Much like its predecessor, the iX4 is set to replace the X4, which has yet to receive a new generation. The iX4 shares the same platform as the other Neue Klasse models but features a lower roofline and reduced boot space.

In terms of dimensions, the iX4 is 782 mm shorter in length, 897 mm narrower in wheelbase, and 595 mm lower in height compared to the iX3. However, it retains the same width and offers a boot space ranging from 490 to 1,600 litres, slightly less than the iX3's 520 and 1,750 litres. The iX4 also accommodates an additional 58 litres of storage underneath the hood.

Externally, the iX4 showcases the sloping coupe-inspired roofline characteristic of the Neue Klasse models, measuring 40 mm shorter than the iX3. It is available with optional Iconic Glow illuminated grille and Adaptive LED headlights, as well as alloy wheels up to 22 inches. Inside, the iX4 mirrors the iX3's interior without any alterations. Non-M Performance variants can be customized with the M Sport package, which includes Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes with blue calipers.

Initially, the iX4 will be available in two models, with a third joining later in 2027. The xDrive 50 serves as the middle model, powered by the same 108.7-kWh battery pack as the iX3, delivering a total output of 345kW/645Nm. It boasts a top speed of 210 km/h, a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds, and an estimated range of 828 km. The DC fast charging offers a 20-minute recharge time to reach 400 kW.

At the top of the range, the M60 model offers 450kW/875Nm of power, achieved through dual-electric motors and the inclusion of M Adaptive suspension, electronically controlled shock absorbers, and revised steering. Its top speed reaches 240 km/h, with a 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a claimed range of 777 km. The iX4 is scheduled to launch in Europe in March, with BMW South Africa yet to decide on its availability in the local market.
