Belanjawan 2027: REACH gesa insentif anak beli rumah dekat ibu bapa
REACH mencadangkan geran pembelian rumah kepada anak yang membeli kediaman dalam jarak tertentu dari rumah ibu bapa mereka.
Iskandar Samad, the head of REACH, suggested that living near one's parents would make it easier for children to assist their elderly parents and monitor their well-being (Picture: Magnific). The Malaysian government is considering introducing a financial incentive for children who buy homes close to their parents as part of the 2027 budget to bolster support for senior citizens within families.
The REACH coordinator mentioned that such incentives could be given as a house purchase grant to children buying property within a certain distance from their parents' homes. "Higher incentives may also be considered if parents live with children in the same property," he added. The proposal was submitted to the government in May, and it should be considered as a potential measure to increase the number of senior citizens.
Iskandar believes strengthening family institutions is crucial in taking care of the older generation, and such a scheme could be initiated first for low-income and simple families before expanding based on its success. According to REACH, living close to parents would make it easier for children to assist them in daily tasks, provide care during emergencies, and monitor their well-being.
Singapore has implemented a similar approach through its Proximity Housing Grant, offering up to S$30,000 to families who buy homes to live with their parents or children, while a grant up to S$20,000 is available for homes within a 4km radius of parents' or children's homes. Iskandar noted that Malaysia may not need to mirror the program entirely but should consider its principles as they can also help strengthen family institutions and care for senior citizens.
"This is not just a housing assistance; it's a social investment," he said. Iskandar said bolstering senior citizen support within families should also evolve alongside the Warga Emas Bill. "We support this effort, but in terms of protection, laws should move in tandem with incentives that help families take care of their parents.
We shouldn't just ask about a child's responsibility towards their parents. The government should also ask what kind of support can be provided to make them more capable of fulfilling that responsibility," he added, also serving as PAS' treasurer.
