Wajir patient isolated over suspected viral haemorrhagic fever

Wajir health authorities have isolated a 20-year-old man who recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is now exhibiting a severe febrile illness. The patient, residing in Habaswein of Wajir South Sub-County, was reported with a fever, headache, and cough, along with severe anaemia (haemoglobin 4 g/dL). He had reportedly been traveling through DRC, Uganda, and various parts of Kenya before reaching Habaswein on September 20.

He had worked as a "tan boy" on a cargo truck in DRC since September 2, developing symptoms of fever and headache. After visiting Uganda for five days and receiving treatment for suspected pneumonia and septicaemia, he was transported to Malaba, then Nairobi, Isiolo, and finally Habaswein. Upon arrival, he was treated at Hilac Medical Clinic for pneumonia and septicaemia but showed no improvement.

He was subsequently admitted to Albadar Nursing Home, where he has received treatments including intravenous Augmentin, paracetamol, and two units of whole blood.

Samples have been gathered for testing at the National Public Health Virology Laboratory (NPHVL), and contact tracing is underway. Although the illness has not been confirmed as Ebola or any other viral haemorrhagic fever, authorities are on high alert following the country's first imported Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease case in a Kenyan national who travelled from the DRC through Uganda. The NPHVL laboratory results will be crucial in determining the exact cause of the patient's illness.
