UVA basketball preseason profile: Can Sam Lewis take another leap?
Lewis will have more on his plate this year.
Sam Lewis, the 6-foot-7 senior from Chicago, Illinois, is considered the biggest variable on the Virginia Cavaliers' attempt to prove that retention is the key to success in today's college basketball. After taking significant strides during his time at Toledo, Lewis has continued to improve at Virginia, becoming one of the team's most reliable offensive threats.
Despite dealing with a nagging injury, Lewis posted double-digit scoring efforts 20 times during the 2025-26 season and maintained his elite efficiency from deep (40.3%). His ability to consistently score from beyond the arc, combined with his strong play in the paint, makes him a crucial asset for the team as they aim to build on their retention of all eligible players from the previous year.
