Police arrest three over AAU lecturer’s death after encounter with sex worker

Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, passed away after collapsing in a hotel room on Sunday. The incident involved him and a 21-year-old woman named Angela Defa Jacob, a commercial sex worker, according to the Edo State Police Command. On Tuesday, Edo State Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that three individuals had been arrested in connection with the circumstances surrounding the lecturer's death.

Ikoedem stated that Uwuigbe checked into the hotel and engaged the services of Jacob before he was found dead in the room. The hotel owner, manager, and the woman with the deceased have been taken into custody as the police investigate the cause of his death. Dr. Uwuigbe's remains were placed at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

While the university confirmed he was a member of their academic staff, they stressed that the incident occurred outside the institution's premises and was unrelated to their official activities.
