Lionel Messi: Five moments that shaped his football legacy

Dubai: Lionel Messi's final appearance for Argentina was an emotionally charged occasion as the World Cup winner led his team to a 3-0 victory over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. Messi delivered a memorable performance, providing two assists before scoring from the penalty spot in the 71st minute. The goal marked his 126th goal for Argentina and his 208th and final appearance for his country.

However, the spotlight quickly shifted to the emotional atmosphere inside the stadium. Enzo Fernandez, a key player for Manchester City, was visibly moved as the tributes for Messi took place post-game. The situation intensified when Messi's eldest son, Thiago, joined his father and they shared a heartfelt embrace. Antonella Roccuzzo, Messi's ex-wife, also joined in the emotional reunion.

The emotional scenes were mirrored by the Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, who could not hide his tears. Messi managed to maintain his composure during his farewell speech, thanking the supporters and reflecting on his 21-year-long association with the national team. His emotions, however, were evident even before he addressed the crowd, with cameras capturing him wiping away tears as the team bus headed towards the stadium, lined by thousands of supporters.

The final whistle saw Messi surrounded by teammates and opponents, receiving a final ovation from the Monumental crowd. A drone tribute was also organized for the 39-year-old, marking the end of an era for Argentina as well as the emotional goodbye for Messi to the shirt he wore for 21 years.
