Insecurity: Five Borno communities return home as farming, schools resume

Five communities in Borno State's Kukawa Local Government Area have returned home after years of displacement due to the Boko Haram insurgency, as security improves and life resumes. Kukawa Local Government Area's Executive Chairman, Mustapha Muhammad, announced this in Maiduguri on Tuesday. He informed that with the restored peace, residents could once again access their ancestral lands and resume farming activities.

"The farmers are now returning to their ancestral homes after the restoration of peace in the area, and they are now having access to their farmlands," Muhammad stated. He also mentioned that schools that had been closed due to the insurgency are now reopening and welcoming children back to classrooms. Additionally, fishing activities that were disrupted by the insurgency are gradually resuming, along with fish marketing and related businesses.

However, Muhammad acknowledged that some security challenges persist, especially for those traveling between the communities. He noted that some routes still require military escorts, though attacks and ambushes have significantly decreased along major routes like Mairari-Cross Kauwa and Doro. The local government is collaborating with security agencies to maintain the security gains and ensure residents can move freely and reestablish their businesses.
