Dubai's Indian Consulate auditorium echoed with a standing ovation on Wednesday as over 200 Indian expats paid tribute to flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar. The community honored the hero credited with saving 174 lives during an alleged cockpit attack. Jitendra Vaidya, President of the Indian People Forum UAE, led the emotional tribute, urging the audience to stand in the pilot's honor.
The Consul General of India, Dr Vishnu Reddy, and other diplomats joined in the enthusiastic applause. Vaidya emphasized that life's decisions, sometimes made in fractions of a second, are shaped by presence of mind, courage, values, and instinct. The captain's split-second decision averted a potential disaster, landing the Boeing 737 MAX 8 safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi later reported that Captain Machchhar continues to make steady progress.
