French startup VoltR has raised €22 million to expand its lithium battery remanufacturing operations in Europe. The funds, comprising a €16 million equity investment and €6 million in grants, come from the SPI 2 Fund, managed by Bpifrance under the France 2030 initiative, and Decathlon PULSE. CEO Maxime Bleskine explained that lithium cells nearing the end of their first life cycle can still be economically viable for industrial use, and the company has validated this claim with over 20,000 batteries already on the market.
VoltR aims to increase its production capacity sixfold and double its workforce within two years, creating approximately 40 jobs. The investment aims to bolster Europe's battery value chain, enhancing the country's sovereignty and decreasing environmental impact. Established in 2022 by Alban Regnier, François Mallet, Thibaud Maufront, and Bleskine, VoltR recovers used battery cells and repurposes them into new batteries tailored to their residual performance.
The company claims its end-to-end integrated model, encompassing battery collection, cell diagnostics, and production, can contribute to a more resilient supply chain and address environmental concerns by maximizing the use of resources and energy from already produced cells before recycling.
