Chicago has held its first election for the position of Chief of the Chicago School Board, a politically charged race featuring significant elements such as millions in campaign donations, special interest group support, and a candidate withdrawing from the race. On November 3, voters will choose between three candidates to lead the institution, marking the first time the position will be directly elected by the public after 30 years of being controlled by the mayor.

The role holds executive power but is unpaid and represents the School Board in external affairs, presides over meetings, and helps set the agenda.
