This macOS 27 tool disables Apple Intelligence, deletes its models, and stops them coming back after updates

Apple's latest macOS version, Golden Gate, introduces agentic operating systems and centers around Apple Intelligence, making it more challenging to disable. In response, the command-line script RemoveMacAI has gained popularity. This script not only deactivates AI features but also removes their models, freeing up approximately 12 GB of storage space.

During the development of Siri with AI features in macOS 27, Apple lagged behind competitors like Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, and Meta. While Apple initially introduced a few AI features for Siri, they have faced delays. With macOS 27's release in September, Apple encouraged users to utilize Siri for various tasks such as web searches, photo editing, image analysis, and drafting.

The new Siri app aggregates AI chats across Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Despite the industry's heavy investments in AI, many users, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, remain hesitant to use it. Although individual Siri AI features can be disabled, macOS 27 lacks a comprehensive off switch. Even when users turn off or ignore Siri AI, RemoveMacAI ensures models are deleted from the disk and prevented from redownloading during updates.

Users can customize which AI features to deactivate, including third-party AI extensions, Genmoji, email summaries, photo editing, auto-drafting, and more. RemoveMacAI also deletes the associated models and prevents future macOS updates from redownloading or reactivating Apple Intelligence. A command is available to revert all changes and restore AI features to their default settings.

However, the app does not disable dictation or remove its models, as they are distinct from Siri AI. Users may still observe a running process called Siri, which likely manages the Spotlight window and other protected routines.
