The easiest Apple Watch to recommend is $50 off

A year after Apple was found guilty of infringing Masimo's patent for low-power pulse oximeter features in the Apple Watch, it has been ordered to pay an additional $184 million in interest. This brings the total damages paid by Apple to $818 million. Initially, Apple was ordered to pay $634 million in damages, but a federal judge has now ordered an extra sum.

The dispute began with an International Trade Commission ruling in 2023, which mandated Apple to remove the blood oxygen feature from two Apple Watch models to allow them to be sold in the US. Apple was also sued by Masimo for patent infringement. Apple was found guilty and ordered to pay damages equivalent to the license fees it should have paid.

Judge James V. Selna rejected Apple's argument that awarding interest would be a windfall for Masimo, citing US Supreme Court guidance that interest merely serves to make the patent owner whole. The judge also rejected Apple's request for a 7% interest rate, stating that the interest rate should be equivalent to what Masimo pays on its own borrowing.

Nonetheless, the annual compounding still added a total of $184 million to the amount Apple is required to pay.
