The best time to book Thanksgiving flights is coming. Here’s the date to know

If you're considering flying for Thanksgiving, there's still a window in which to snag some savings. According to data from KAYAK, domestic airfare typically hits its lowest point around five weeks before the holiday, which would be early to mid-October this year. After that, prices are likely to start rising, particularly as the holiday approaches.

Historically, fares have surged within two weeks of departure, though this pattern isn't set in stone. When you travel can have a significant impact on the cost. Those willing to fly on Thanksgiving Day itself could save up to 19% on domestic flights compared to departing on November 20, while international travelers could save as much as 49%.

For Christmas travelers, fares have generally been lower between four and seven weeks before departure, putting the sweet spot between late November and early December. Traveling during Christmas week could also save money compared to the week before. Contrary to popular belief, round-trip tickets aren't always the cheapest option.

In fact, combining two one-way tickets could save up to 29% on domestic trips and 30% on international trips. While overall airfare has been higher in 2026 than in 2025, some international destinations are offering surprising deals. For example, average airfare to Cusco, Peru, is down 20%, while fares to Phuket, Thailand, are down 16%.

Canada is emerging as a popular holiday destination, with searches for Québec City up 73% year-over-year and Montréal searches up 45%. With four of the five international destinations having the lowest average fares in KAYAK's data located in Canada, the biggest takeaway from the data is when to book, rather than where to go.
