Sultan Ibrahim confers top military honour on Defence Force, Army chiefs

On October 2, 2026, the Defence Minister of Ghana, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, urged the nation to honor and support its veterans while they are still alive, cautioning against waiting until the last surviving pre-independence veterans have passed. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Poppy Appeal, Mr Adjei emphasized that the poppy represents more than fundraising; it is an opportunity to remember and express gratitude to those who sacrificed for Ghana's independence.

He highlighted that the last few pre-independence veterans were gradually disappearing, with only a handful still alive, and stressed that the country had a responsibility to ensure the remaining veterans received the respect and support they deserved. The Minister called for contributions to the appeal not just as donations but as an investment in gratitude, a means of acknowledging the sacrifices made by veterans.

He also pushed for greater efforts to document and preserve the stories of veterans, urging students, media houses, and cultural institutions to help younger generations understand Ghana's military history and the role of veterans. Brigadier General Seidu Mumuni Adams, the Executive Director of the Veterans Administration, Ghana (VAG), echoed the call for support during the appeal, emphasizing the need to construct and equip five permanent district office accommodations to bring veteran services closer to those who need them.

He stressed that every contribution, no matter how small, was appreciated when made with a grateful heart, and that collective efforts could transform empty spaces into functional offices where veterans and their dependents could seek assistance with dignity.
