Doha, Qatar - The Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has unveiled the "It's Time" initiative during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This community-wide campaign aims to increase awareness, encourage early detection, and promote healthy lifestyles to minimize breast cancer risk factors.
Sponsored by Qatar National Bank (QNB), "It's Time" targets all segments of society in Qatar. The campaign employs a multi-faceted approach, utilizing outdoor advertising, digital screens in shopping malls, and awareness activities across traditional and digital media. It also includes workshops and lectures, both in-person and online, for various community groups, schools, and universities.
A special workshop for breast cancer survivors will be held alongside the campaign's launch, fostering a dialogue between media professionals and survivors. This event aims to share messages of awareness, hope, and the significance of community support throughout the cancer journey.
Mona Ashkanani, General Manager of QCS, emphasized the shared responsibility in breast cancer awareness. She urged women to prioritize their health, undergo screening, and support those affected by breast cancer. According to the Qatar National Cancer Registry, 562 new breast cancer cases were reported among women in Qatar in 2023, with non-Qatari women accounting for 71% of cases. Women aged 45-49 were the most affected age group.
Ashkanani also addressed common misconceptions that may delay women from seeking medical advice. These include the belief that every breast lump is cancerous, that mammograms cause cancer, or that biopsies can spread the disease.
