P Pinang peroleh pelaburan teknologi perubatan RM2.3 bilion
Sektor turut wujudkan hampir 4,500 peluang kerja, kata Ketua Menteri Chow Kon Yeow.
Pulau Pinang has attracted RM2.3 billion in investment into its advanced medical technology sector from 2021 to the first half of 2026, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. This is a sign of the growing MedTech ecosystem and shift towards higher-value manufacturing in the region. "Medical technology is no longer a niche sector here; it is at the forefront of the high-value manufacturing ecosystem," he stated at the Malaysia MedTech Industry Summit.
Present at the event were MDA Executive Director Dr P Muralitharan and Executive Deputy Director of Malaysia Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Surayu Susah. Chow revealed that Pulau Pinang currently hosts seven of the top 30 global medical technology companies, including Abbott, Boston Scientific, B Braun, Smith+Nephew, Steris, Dexcom, and Intuitive Surgical.
The state has also recorded RM238 million in exports of optical devices, precision instruments, and surgical equipment between 2021 and mid-2026, contributing an average of 64% of Malaysia's exports in that category. Additionally, the Pulau Pinang medical technology industry benefits from synergies between the electrical and electronics (E&E) and advanced technology sectors, built upon five decades of expertise in semiconductors and cutting-edge technology.
The state government is currently focused on transitioning from mass manufacturing to higher-value activities, including design, research, development, testing facilities, and calibration capabilities. Chow stated that the region aims to double the number of local medical technology companies producing MDA-approved devices from the current 20 to 40.
As of now, more than 20 local medical technology firms already produce MDA-approved devices, ranging from orthopedic implants and surgical instruments to wound care products, prosthetics, infection control solutions, and consumables for healthcare. Moreover, the state government plans to collaborate with industry players and academics to develop the skilled workforce needed to support the sector's growth.
"Pulau Pinang's experience in developing its semiconductor industry has laid a strong foundation for the next phase of medical technology development. Therefore, high-precision technology represents the next chapter in this story, contributing to human health," he added.
