North Coast GBV response team hosts fundraiser amid rising demand

The North Coast Rapid Response Team (RRT) is hosting a fundraiser on November 7 to support their critical work combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on the North Coast. The RRT, a non-profit organization, has reported a significant increase in GBV cases, with about seven serious incidents reported daily. The team's financial strain has been exacerbated by the surge in cases, as they do not receive any funding to operate.

Dr Daniel Chettiar, founder of the DSK Group and member of the RRT, highlighted the team's struggles, particularly in dealing with cases that require long-distance travel and substantial resources. One such case involved a woman who was brutally attacked by her partner, requiring multiple stitches on her hands and stomach. Another case involved a deaf mother and her children, who were forced out of their home after their mother was assaulted.

The RRT's work also includes cases of young women beaten so severely they are barely recognizable. Chettiar emphasized that GBV in households is often unaddressed and that the crisis is "unstoppable" without adequate manpower and funding. The DSK Group is urging residents and businesses to support their fundraising initiative to help the RRT effectively respond to GBV cases.

The fundraiser, the DSK KZN GBV Gala 2026, will be held at the Imbizo Conference Centre at Sibaya Casino under the theme 'Unmask the Truth. Ignite Change. Stand in Support.' The event aims to challenge society to recognize the collective responsibility needed to end violence against women and children. Keynote speaker Thami Ntuli and other speakers, including Vivian Reddy and Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, will address the audience, along with a candlelight tribute for those lost to GBV.

Tickets are available for R1,000 per person, featuring a three-course meal, with a mask and masquerade or chic evening attire dress code. For more information, contact Dr Chettiar at 078 688 6623.
