The Court of Appeal in Kaduna has decided to hold off on rendering a decision in the bail appeal brought forth by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai. During the court proceedings on Tuesday, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) sought the dismissal of the appeal. Nevertheless, El-Rufai's legal representative, Paul Erokoro, SAN, contended that the allegations against his client do not qualify as capital offences and that his ongoing imprisonment is hindering his capacity to thoroughly prepare his defense.
Erokoro further highlighted El-Rufai's status as a significant opposition figure, pointing out that the criminal charges were brought forth in proximity to an election. "We submit that the offences with which the appellant is charged are not capital offences, and his continued detention is affecting his ability to prepare his defence," Erokoro stated before the court.
After hearing arguments from both parties, the court opted to reserve its judgment. The timing of when the judgment will be delivered has not been announced.
