Bacteria in cocktail: Food Safety dept. files case against outlet in Keralam’s Kannur
The action followed an analysis done at the Regional Analytical Laboratory at Malaparamba, Kozhikode.
The Kannur Food Safety Department has initiated legal proceedings against a well-known juice vendor at a Caltex petrol station following the detection of hazardous bacteria in one of their cocktails. This decision came after laboratory tests conducted at the Regional Analytical Laboratory in Malaparamba, Kozhikode, revealed the presence of unsafe bacteria.
The Kannur Circle of the Food Safety Department subsequently filed a case before the Taliparamba Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO). Reports of health issues, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches, emerged on September 21, with multiple individuals, including children, falling ill after consuming the cocktail at the outlet. Following these complaints, officials from the Health and Food Safety departments, along with the Kannur Corporation Health wing, conducted an inspection of the establishment on September 23.
They collected samples, which were subsequently sent for laboratory analysis. Upon reviewing the lab report, Food Safety Assistant Commissioner S. Sangeeth recommended the registration of a case. A total of 55 complaints have been lodged with the Food Safety Department in connection with this incident. The department has also included provisions for compensation for those affected.
The affected restaurant will be allowed to reopen once the issues identified by the Food Safety Department are rectified.
