The eighth season of the Dolphin Swimming League kicked off in a vibrant manner at Grange School, located in Lagos, Nigeria. Hundreds of young swimmers, together with their parents and guardians, flocked to the event to back their favorite athletes. The annual league, regarded as the top inter-school swimming competition in Nigeria, is organized by Dynaspro Sports Promotion in partnership with Advanta Interactive Limited.
It has been endorsed by the Nigeria Aquatics Federation along with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), and the Lagos State Swimming Association.
The league, which debuted in 2018 with only five schools, has expanded rapidly to include 23 schools and swimming clubs. This year, participants from Abuja also joined the competition, signifying the league's growing influence across the country. The Africa Aquatics Federation has lauded the league for its significant role in fostering junior swimming development in Nigeria.
At the opening ceremony, Babatunde Fatai-Williams, the Vice President of the African Aquatics Federation, expressed his deep appreciation for the league's impact on the youth swimming scene. He highlighted how the competition offers young swimmers regular chances to train, compete, assess their performance, and progress over time.
Fatai-Williams emphasized the league's importance, stating, "I have been a staunch supporter of the Dolphin Swimming League since its inception in 2018. It has made a tremendous impact on junior swimming in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole."
The league's coordinator, Oluseyi Oyebode, called for increased backing from various stakeholders to bolster grassroots swimming initiatives nationwide. Despite receiving support from the Nigerian Olympic Committee, the Lagos State Government, and the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Oyebode pointed out the need for more cooperation to guarantee the league's ongoing growth and expansion.
He acknowledged the difficulties of operating at the grassroots level and stressed that solid structures and sustainability are vital for the league's enduring success.
