Varsity Rankings: UNILORIN Rated No 1 in Research Quality

Hammed Shittu in Ilorin The University of Ilorin in Kwara State at the weekend emerged Nigeria’s number one university in the realm of Research Quality in the just released Times

The University of Ilorin in Kwara State has been declared Nigeria's top-ranked institution for research quality in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Achieving a score of 69.4 percent, the institution surpassed other Nigerian universities, including the University of Lagos, Bayero University Kano, and the University of Ibadan.

The ranking assessment considered five key factors: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. Prof. Suleiman Folorunso Ambali, the University Ranking Implementation Project Manager, highlighted that research quality is UNILORIN's strongest area, with the goal of increasing international recognition and moving into the 801-1000 band in the next edition of the rankings.

Currently, UNILORIN has moved from the 1201-1500 band in 2026 to the 1001-1200 world band. The university is now one of the seven Nigerian institutions in the global top 1,200, ahead of the University of Lagos, Bayero University Kano, and the University of Ibadan in terms of research quality, which accounts for 30% of the overall score.

UNILORIN's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, attributed the accomplishment to years of diligent scholarship by faculty, researchers, postgraduate supervisors, and students whose work has been widely cited by scholars worldwide.
