North Korea's Asian Games run overshadowed by poor sportsmanship

North Korea's participation in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games brought mixed results, as the country's delegation excelled in sports while often displaying poor sportsmanship. Despite achieving a respectable 12th place overall with a haul of seven gold, 13 silver and nine bronze medals, North Korea's behavior outside the arena cast a shadow over their achievements.

The delegation's tendency to reject results and create barriers with other athletes flouted the ethos of the Games' slogan, "Imagine One Asia." While North Korea's weightlifters continued to dominate, securing all seven of their gold medals in that event, their women's soccer team also proved to be a powerhouse, managing to earn a silver medal.

However, the closed-off demeanor of the athletes, coupled with public displays of self-criticism and a refusal to accept officiating decisions, drew significant criticism. Even within the realm of international sports, North Korean athletes maintained a distance from their competitors and the media.
