In the first half of 2026, Nigeria's Federal Government installed a total of 707,765 electricity meters across the country, marking a significant 71 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025, where only 412,792 meters were deployed. These numbers were disclosed in the quarterly data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The installations were distributed across two quarters. The first quarter of 2026 saw the installation of 357,495 meters, while the second quarter registered 350,270 meters. In contrast, the first quarter of 2025 recorded 187,161 installations, and the second quarter of the same year saw 225,631 installations.

The surge in meter installations is part of the government's and electricity distribution companies' initiatives to broaden metering, cut the number of unmetered customers, and enhance billing transparency within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). According to NERC, DISREP (Distribution Sector Recovery Programme) played a pivotal role in this surge, with 205,486 meters installed under this framework, accounting for 58.67 per cent of the total installations in the second quarter of 2026.

Apart from DISREP, the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework facilitated 123,833 installations, and the Metering Asset Finance (MAF) framework contributed 13,028 meters. The DisCo-financed framework accounted for 7,643 meters, while the Vendor Financed framework saw 280 meters installed. As of the end of June 2026, 7,743,839 out of the 12,589,486 active registered customers in the NESI were metered, resulting in a metering rate of 61.51 per cent.

This data revealed that over 4.8 million active registered electricity customers were still without meters as of the end of June.
