Nearly 300 VW Amaroks recalled after curtain-airbag safety alert
Volkswagen is recalling 291 Amarok vehicles in South Africa after a fault was identified that could prevent the curtain airbag from fully deploying in a crash.
The National Consumer Commission has initiated a recall of nearly 300 Volkswagen Amarok vehicles produced in a limited run. Volkswagen Group Africa (Pty) Ltd notified the commission, which reported the affected vehicles were sold across South Africa from June 2 to September 15, 2026. A total of 291 units are impacted by this recall.
According to Pheto Ntaba, spokesperson for the commission, a front or side impact may prevent the curtain airbag from deploying fully. This is attributed to contact with an interior component, which may cause sharp-edged plastic pieces to become loose or remain inside the airbag. The issue could compromise the driver's and front passenger's protection. Furthermore, sharp-edged parts of the guide element could separate or remain in the head or neck contact area, leading to a higher risk of injury in an accident.
Consumers with the affected vehicles are instructed to bring their cars to any authorized Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer for the replacement of the problematic components. This repair will be performed free of charge. Recently, over 500 Suzuki Grand Vitara vehicles were recalled due to a fuel alert fault, affecting 543 units sold through Suzuki dealerships from May 2025.
The manufacturer informed the commission that the low fuel warning light may not activate as the fuel level decreases, potentially causing the vehicle to run out of fuel and stall.
