NAPE Tasks Oil Industry Operators on Integrated Operations

The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) urged oil and gas operators to abandon fragmented operations and embrace integrated seismic inversion and forward seismic modeling to maximize oil and gas reserves in mature and deepwater fields, and facilitate field development. This call was made during NAPE’s September Technical/Business Meeting in Lagos, themed “From Seismic to Value: Leveraging Seismic Inversion & Forward Seismic Modeling in Geomodeling to Enable Field Development.”

The session, chaired by Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Obi from Seplat Energy, featured a lecture by ExxonMobil Geologist, Mr. Michael McGlashan.

McGlashan emphasized that unlocking value requires integrating all available data — seismic, geologic concepts, and dynamic behavior — into a unified workflow, discouraging solutions that are geophysically plausible but geologically incorrect. He cautioned that even if a solution might be geophysically plausible, it is not an acceptable solution unless the geology is also integrated.

Regarding inversion scales, McGlashan explained that seismic band provides relative impedance changes, absolute band includes low-frequency models to derive actual elastic properties like VpVs and reservoir properties like net and porosity, while full band incorporates geostatistics for sub-seismic resolution that fundamentally alters flow behavior. He highlighted that understanding scale is crucial for unlocking value.
