Johor sedia bantu kukuh aspek keselamatan di sekolah, kata Onn Hafiz

Johor's Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed his readiness to investigate and assist with basic needs in the state's schools, aiming to strengthen safety measures following the tragic death of 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Khairool Faisal at a secondary school in Yong Peng. The Chief Minister stated that the state government would always support any actions taken by the Ministry of Education (KPM), particularly in installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in designated school locations.

He mentioned that the state government had received reports related to the incident and would investigate various aspects and possibilities to ensure the safety of school students and pupils. "We have thousands of schools in Johor and we will assist... the safety of schools needs to be examined more thoroughly. I will communicate with the relevant ministry officials regarding the student safety issue," he said upon visiting the victim's family in Kampung Parit Selamat.

Meanwhile, Johor's Education and Communications Exco Dr Naqib Md Ghazali indicated that soon, a discussion will be held between Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and Batu Pahat District Education Office (PPD). He said the discussion would thoroughly examine the incident, and one of the things that need improvement is the safety aspect within school premises.

"Probably tomorrow I will call all (including JPNJ and PPD) officials and sit down... review SOPs, identify weaknesses and shortcomings will try to address. This is not a matter of games because it involves loss of lives," he said. On Friday, the 16-year-old Form Four student was found unconscious and covered in blood at a school hall around 5:50 PM.

Johor Police Chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said the victim suffered injuries to the head and body before being pronounced dead at the scene. The police subsequently detained a 16-year-old male teenager nearby Yong Peng around 7 PM on the same day before obtaining a six-day detention order until October 9 to aid the investigation under Section 302 of the Police Force Act.
