Japan PM calls China 'important neighbor', pledges stable relationship

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi referred to China as a crucial neighbor and affirmed her commitment to fostering a stable relationship with the Asian superpower in a policy speech on Monday. Relations between the two nations have significantly deteriorated since Takaichi hinted in November that Japan might intervene in any conflict on the strategically significant island of Taiwan.

China's Prime Minister stated, "China is an important neighbor, and despite the challenges, we have cultivated a long-standing bond over the years." She outlined her government's intentions to enhance communication on shared issues, facilitate dialogue to protect national interests, and establish a mutually beneficial and stable partnership.

However, Takaichi emphasized that Japan would also "firmly defend our country's positions" and "strongly advocate for responsible conduct." Additionally, the premier hinted at the drafting of a comprehensive plan to address Japan's demographic challenges, describing it as a "gradual national crisis." Despite her growing popularity in her first year in office, Takaichi faces complex challenges as she attempts to navigate the intricate relationship between Japan and China.
