HK privacy watchdog probes 24/7 Fitness after pinhole cameras found in changing room

Hong Kong's privacy watchdog has launched an investigation into the 24/7 Fitness gym chain following the discovery of pinhole cameras in a changing room at one of its Sha Tin branches. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) stated on Monday that it had initiated a compliance check on 24/7 Fitness and requested the company to provide details about its security measures.

The incident was reported last month by a staff member at a 24/7 Fitness branch in Sha Tin who found pinhole cameras mounted on the ceiling. A 34-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged with voyeurism. The PCPD emphasized that the probe aimed to ensure the adequate protection of members' personal data privacy and would examine whether the security measures implemented by 24/7 Fitness were sufficient to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Following the discovery, 24/7 Fitness announced that it had implemented new procedures and intensified checks across all its branches for hidden cameras. The company inspected showers, changing rooms, and restrooms to ensure members could use the facilities safely and with peace of mind. It also suspended the suspect's membership and cooperated with the police investigation.

The branch where the pinhole cameras were found is located in Lek Yuen Estate, Sha Tin. 24/7 Fitness operates over 160 gyms throughout Hong Kong.
