Different political stakes shape how Umno handles PAS talks, says analyst

An analyst, Syaza Shukri from International Islamic University Malaysia, explains that the divergent tones of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and deputy president Mohamad Hasan reflect different political calculations they face in considering cooperation with PAS. Zahid, who appears more pragmatic, has to consider how any arrangement would maintain his position within the party.

Mohamad, known as Tok Mat, is not as focused on his own political survival, as he remains the second in command regardless of the outcome. Zahid is still the primary decision-maker on major party matters, implying his final say prevails. Former Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi noted Zahid's emphasis on the "blue wave" following Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional's victory in Negeri Sembilan, while Mohamad urged PAS to demonstrate sincerity through a snap election in PAS-led Terengganu, a request that was later ignored by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Awang Azman Pawi from Universiti Malaya avoids suggesting a split within Umno, instead describing it as different strategic positions within the party. He attributes Zahid's more open approach to keeping political options alive, whereas Mohamad emphasizes reciprocity and mutual respect for any cooperation.
