Darius Slay rips into Kelvin Sheppard’s Lions defense amid Panthers disaster
The Detroit Lions have united through a rocky start to the 2026 NFL season with Dan Campbell defending Jared Goff against a snide Ben Johnson comment . Carolina Panthers' running back Chuba Hubbard scored a touchdown during the first half against the Detroit Lions in a game at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, October 4th, 2026. Darius Slay criticized the Lions' defense, specifically their defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, after the Panthers' loss. The Detroit Lions, under head coach Dan Campbell, suffered a 32-26 defeat to the Carolina Panthers, struggling with a defense that lacked talent to compete against Bryce Young and the Panthers' offense.
The Lions outgained Carolina by 452 to 445 points, but much of their yardage came in hurried, desperation plays late in the game. The Panthers' talent, led by Chubba Hubbard and Tetairoa McMillan, overwhelmed the Lions' defense, which was not equipped to handle the challenge. Despite Campbell's seemingly unfazed demeanor, the defensive struggles have turned into a crisis for the Lions.
With no turnovers against the Panthers, the Lions' secondary, including a second-round pick in Derrick Moore, failed to make an impact. If Sheppard doesn't improve the defense quickly, Slay's harsh criticism may be echoed by many others calling for a solution to the Lions' defensive woes.
