CIA report warns of civil conflict and 'collapse' in Israel: Report

A CIA report published on Monday warns that Israel is at risk of sliding into civil conflict or complete collapse due to deep domestic divisions. The report, titled "Fracture From Within," is based on an "alternative analysis" provided by CIA experts. Israel's upcoming October 27 elections, which will determine the future of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political reign, are highlighted as a volatile period.

A central issue causing tension is the exemption from military service granted to ultra-Orthodox Israelis, who are required to focus on religious studies in yeshivas. This exemption has long been contentious and has intensified as tensions rise. Netanyahu's coalition has failed to pass legislation regulating this enlistment, resulting in dozens of young men being detained and mass protests supported by key allies.

Another factor contributing to instability is the presence of tens of thousands of heavily armed veterans struggling to integrate into civilian life. Israeli reservists are known to carry assault rifles in public, creating an environment ripe for potential unrest. Additionally, settler violence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, coupled with food inflation and soaring military spending costs, further exacerbate the situation.

The report suggests that if foreign technology and AI companies reduce their investments and hiring in Israel, or if regional governments decide to end or limit relations with Israel, civil conflict could be sparked. However, the report mainly focuses on internal Israeli divisions and does not address the tensions faced by Palestinian citizens of Israel, who make up 20% of the population and experience discrimination.
