Avengers: Endgame overtakes Avatar again to become the highest-grossing movie of all time

Avengers: Endgame managed to surpass Avatar and claim the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time, for the second time. Despite not being among the top five earners for this weekend's box office, the movie still managed to amass a total of $2.9255 billion worldwide, just a few dollars above Avatar's total of $2.9237 billion.

The re-release of Avengers: Endgame played a significant role in securing its position as the all-time top-grossing film. The movie first surpassed Avatar in July 2019, shortly after its initial release. An Avatar re-release in 2021 helped Cameron's sci-fi epic reclaim the top spot when its total exceeded $2.81 billion. However, Avengers: Endgame Encore's debut last weekend brought in a staggering $86 million, enabling it to reclaim the top position again.

While the movie secured a narrow victory in domestic box office rankings for the weekend, its worldwide total only reached $18.8 million, marking a significant decline from the previous weekend's numbers. The allure of the movie lies in the new footage it offers, with four new scenes totaling about four minutes of runtime. These scenes serve as teasers for December's Avengers: Doomsday, a movie that is expected to be another major release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Unfortunately, Avengers: Endgame Encore's box office returns seem to be slowing down, and it is unclear if it can reach the elusive $3 billion mark.
