AI Is Making It Too Easy to Avoid Thinking

I use AI every day. I build things with it, experiment with it, write code with it, learn about new things with it, and generally think it's one of the most interesting technologies I've ever had access to. So this is definitely not an "AI is ruining everything" post. But I do think AI is creating a problem that we probably need to talk about more: It has become incredibly easy to avoid thinking.…

I am regularly utilizing AI, employing it for various tasks such as coding, experimentation, learning new topics, and generally finding it to be an intriguing technology. This is not a post condemning AI's potential drawbacks, but I believe it is important to discuss an issue that has emerged: AI has become exceedingly easy to rely on, potentially avoiding the need for critical thinking. This is a concerning development.

In the past, writing an essay on a topic of little interest required considerable effort. You had to research, understand various perspectives, take notes, decide which information was crucial, and organize your thoughts. The process involved countless revisions, breaks, and eventual understanding of the subject matter. While this process was undoubtedly challenging and sometimes frustrating, it also offered valuable learning opportunities.

It taught you how to research effectively, discern credible sources, transform information into your understanding, and communicate your thoughts. The struggle during this process may have been uncomfortable, but it ultimately contributed to your growth and understanding.

However, the landscape has significantly changed. Now, with just a few words, you can request an AI to write a 1,500-word essay on any topic. It handles the research, organizes ideas, structures the content, and even generates the text. While the final product might be satisfactory, this ease of use does not allow for the development of important skills.

The act of grappling with a problem, attempting various solutions, and learning from mistakes is essential for building judgment, persistence, and the ability to tackle unfamiliar situations. The discomfort associated with struggling through a problem or producing inadequate work is a necessary part of the learning process. Relying solely on AI to complete these tasks may lead to a generation that struggles to think independently, solve problems, and develop critical skills.

AI technology has the potential to be a powerful learning tool. It can provide explanations in multiple ways until you grasp a concept, offer testing, debate, and feedback, and even suggest hints rather than the final answer. These features can accelerate the learning process significantly. However, the same tool can also facilitate a situation where the learning process is bypassed entirely.

The difference lies not in the technology itself, but in how we choose to utilize it. It is crucial to be deliberate in our use of AI, ensuring that we preserve the valuable struggle that contributes to personal growth and skill development.
