Maryam, a young girl trafficked from Niger to Ghana for street begging, recently escaped her captor. She was found at the Aboabo bus stop by Sadia Maswud, a local resident. Maryam recounted how she was brought to Kumasi to beg and was attempting to flee the abuse. Her face and back bore visible bruises, inflicted by her master. Her parents in Niger are aware of her situation.
Maryam is presently staying with Ms. Maswud's family in Aboabo Extension. This incident underscores the persistent issue of child trafficking in West Africa. Even with recent security efforts to disrupt exploitation networks, children remain subjected to such cruelty. The effectiveness of present protective measures, the status of the offenders, and required government actions to eliminate forced begging are all questions that remain.
