90pc of life science manufacturers say digital transformation is critical

A report from Rockwell Automation reveals that 90% of life science manufacturers view digital transformation as essential in today's rapidly changing environment. The research, conducted in collaboration with Sapio Research, surveyed 1,560 decision makers across various industries, including life science manufacturing, original equipment manufacturing, system integration and engineering procurement, in 16 countries.

Rockwell Automation's latest State of Smart Manufacturing report indicates that 58% of life science manufacturers have already deployed smart manufacturing technologies at scale, highlighting the importance of connected data, cybersecurity and validated AI applications in improving overall visibility, strengthening quality processes and supporting continuous readiness.

The report found that technology investment is increasingly driven by business outcomes rather than just technological capability, with AI, ML (46%), process automation (44%) and cybersecurity (39%) identified as key drivers of stronger business outcomes. Manufacturers are prioritising these investments to improve quality (43%), digitise operations (36%) and reduce risk (35%).

However, the report also highlights a critical challenge - only 32% of manufacturers effectively use more than half the data they collect. Furthermore, cybersecurity has become a significant lifecycle requirement, with 50% of life sciences organisations experiencing at least one cyberattack in the past year, with IT systems (41%), remote access (33%) and IT/OT integration points (29%) being the most exposed areas.

Rockwell Automation's Matt Weaver emphasized that what was once a project-based regulatory readiness is now a daily discipline that must be integrated into facility operations. The report concludes that successful transformation depends on effectively integrating trusted data, clear governance and operational alignment across systems, processes and teams.
