5 things to watch as Knicks 2026-27 preseason gets underway

Below are five key aspects to watch during the Knicks' 2026-27 preseason:

1. Lineup shifts between familiar returning players and new additions. The team performed well in the postseason, so fans will be interested in observing which players lean more on proven strategies versus experimenting with fresh tactics. Coach Mike Brown's approach to incorporating Karl-Anthony Towns' high post game as a creator will be especially intriguing to monitor.

2. Performance of key players like Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby. Towns returns after a season with questions about his commitment and potential trade rumors due to his player option. His new physique will also be under scrutiny, as he aimed to bulk up during training camp. Anunoby's offensive prowess in the last postseason and his potential for more pick-and-roll opportunities after working with Brown should be closely watched.

3. Jalen Brunson's wrist recovery following surgery. While Brunson's scoring ability is still intact despite his injury history, his wrist status is essential to monitor. His performance post-rehab could significantly impact the Knicks' star player, who had a crucial Finals moment last season.

4. Deep bench development opportunities. Preseason provides a chance for young players like Immanuel Quickley and Landry Shamet to showcase their potential. Additionally, veterans Tyler Kolek, Kevin McCullar Jr., Mohamed Diawara, and newcomer Tyler Nickel could see increased court time, proving their worth for the regular season.

5. Third center position battle between James Wiseman and Drew Eubanks. With no established third-string center on the roster, James Wiseman (former first overall pick) and Drew Eubanks (a steady backup for multiple teams) will compete for the reserve spot. Wiseman's athleticism will be tested against Eubanks' steady performance, offering fans an early look at who might man that backup role.
