Prof Chris Piwuna, president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has criticized the Federal Government's celebration of 29 Nigerian universities being featured in the 2027 Times Higher Education ranking. Piwuna argues that the ranking does not justify the government's assessment, as the universities have only moved five spaces from the 2026 ranking.
He asserts that this minimal progress should not be celebrated, and the government should focus on addressing persistent challenges in funding, research, staffing, and learning conditions.
