M Kulasegaran, Deputy Prime Minister, stated the government is drafting new legislation to strengthen existing laws to incorporate mental health elements. In IPOH, he clarified that the government will allow the legal process to proceed according to established civil suit procedures, as they lack comprehensive information regarding the case.

Kulasegaran expressed reluctance to comment on the matter due to insufficient information. The government's actions and police inquiries will follow standard procedures unless an extraordinary event occurs, he told reporters after a joint program with the Buntong community. Asked if existing laws need strengthening to include mental health elements, he said the government is drafting new legislation on the matter, coordinating with relevant agencies and non-governmental organizations to ensure mental health receives appropriate attention, including among the youth.

Greater attention should also be given to help parents understand their children's needs, including the issue of mental health, he added. The parents of a fourth-grade female student who died on October 14 last year filed a lawsuit in the High Court of Kuala Lumpur against several parties related to the death of a teenage boy who attacked Yap, as well as the teenage boy involved as a defendant.

She explained that the legal action was filed on October 1 through Surendra Ananth, naming several government agencies, the father of the teenage boy who attacked Yap, and the teenage boy involved as a defendant. She said her family believes the tragedy could have been prevented if the relevant parties had taken appropriate steps, particularly in handling the issue of mental health among students.
