Following Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial withdrawal from the Portugal national team, midfielder Bruno Fernandes revealed what he told the captain. The Nasser forward made the decision following a disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus, reportedly stemming from a battle of confidence during a match against Norway. Jesus allegedly undermined Ronaldo's self-esteem after the Norway game, while Proenca, the federation chief, and Jesus discussed the matter.
The manager eventually acknowledged his mistake and reversed his decision in a press conference. This prompted Ronaldo to quit the team. Despite his absence, Portugal secured a 4-2 win against Denmark, with Fernandes stepping up as the new captain. The Manchester United player commented that Ronaldo remains the greatest icon of their national team and country.
Fernandes emphasized the team's unity, stating that issues should be resolved internally and concluded amicably for all parties. Portugal faces Norway in their next UEFA Nations League match in Porto on Sunday, having won all three games in the current international period.
