Onyonka: Babu Owino’s success will be key to Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has emphasized the importance of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino's political success in relation to Senator Edwin Sifuna's 2027 presidential aspirations. During the launch of The Equitable Party (TEP) on October 4, 2026, Onyonka highlighted Owino's crucial role within the emerging political formation. The Kisii senator stated that the political fortunes of these two politicians are closely intertwined as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Onyonka expressed his admiration for Owino, describing him as one of the best young politicians he has encountered. He also addressed criticisms aimed at Owino, asserting that he considers the MP to be an important young political figure. While discussing the support for Sifuna, Onyonka mentioned mentoring young activists backing the senator, including Abbie Zuena.

He recounted an incident where an activist insisted on traveling with the team to Homa Bay despite warnings, resulting in the activist being brutally attacked but remaining committed to the cause. Onyonka also reflected on advice from Siaya Governor James Orengo, who urged him to think beyond merely winning elections. This advice led Onyonka to consider what politicians stand for and fight for, beyond just electoral victories.

Additionally, Onyonka addressed comments surrounding other opposition figures, such as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, praising Matiang'i as a capable manager while reaffirming his support for Sifuna.
