General : Anwar Conveys Condolences, Calls For Thorough Probe Into Student’s Death

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for a comprehensive and open investigation into the death of a 16-year-old girl at Yong Peng secondary school. The teenager was discovered unconscious on school grounds and later pronounced dead. Anwar stressed that the safety of children is a collective responsibility and that the government will not tolerate any compromise on their well-being.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek visited Yong Peng to gather firsthand information about the incident from the police, state education department, Batu Pahat education office, and the school. According to the police, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested and detained for six days to aid the investigation. The case is being treated as a murder, with the motive and cause still under investigation.

Fadhlina demanded a thorough examination of all aspects covered by her ministry, including students' attendance records for extra classes, security measures, and patrols at the school. She also stated that the security company for the school would cooperate with the review, and if any negligence or failure to fulfill responsibilities was found, strict action would be taken.

The victim, Irene Sofiya Khairoul Faisal, was found by her grandmother at the school after realizing she had not returned home from a tuition class around 5:30 pm. The cause of her injuries, which included head trauma and damage to several parts of her body, remains under investigation. Police Chief Ab Rahaman Arsad noted that the suspect, who has no prior criminal record, was apprehended around 7 pm yesterday with additional items such as a mobile phone, clothing, and slippers.
