From “Bars” To Small Missiles: Zelenskyy Explains How Ukraine Will Strengthen Defense Against Russian Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the nation's efforts to strengthen its defenses against Russian attacks during a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The Ukrainian government is pursuing various strategies, including the development of interceptor drones, turrets, and small missiles.

The "Bars" drones have shown promising results, with a 30% success rate in shooting down incoming threats. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany for its support, as Ukraine will receive 2,000 of these long-range drones, which are essentially miniature missiles. The president emphasized that the number of drones will continue to grow as production increases.

Zelenskyy also touched on the Turrets program, which is still in its early stages of development. He stated that dozens of turrets will be installed at various locations across the country to provide additional defensive capabilities.

Another focus area for Ukraine is the development of small missiles. The president revealed that Ukraine is working on multiple types of these missiles, with the first results expected in the second half of October. If successful, the production of these small missiles will be scaled up immediately.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv on October 4 for an unannounced trip, marking the German government's first visit to Ukraine since May 2025.
