Accra to convene Africa’s regulators and markets on tokenisation at AVAS 2026

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Ghana has launched the Africa Virtual Asset Summit (AVAS) 2026, a two-day event scheduled for November 2 and 3, 2026, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra. The summit, themed "Tokenisation: Africa's Pathway Towards Building a Trusted, Inclusive and Innovative Virtual Asset Ecosystem," aims to deliver practical outcomes, including a proposed Accra Declaration that sets shared principles and recommendations for responsible virtual asset and tokenisation ecosystems across the continent.

Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, Director-General of SEC, highlighted the significant participation of Africa in virtual assets and emphasized the need for clear, consistent, and credible regulations. Ghana has established a legal framework for the sector through the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154), which assigns the SEC the responsibility for tokenisation, virtual asset issuance, exchanges, investment advisory services, and virtual asset funds.

The commission also operates a regulatory sandbox for testing products under supervision before full licensing.

Tokenisation, according to Dr. Avedzi, can unlock capital for African assets such as land, gold, cocoa, trade receivables, and infrastructure by enabling smaller digital interests in these assets, broadening the investor base, lowering the cost of capital, and making projects financeable that would otherwise remain inaccessible. AVAS 2026 will explore how to achieve this while maintaining trust and protecting investors from the outset.

The summit will address regulation, governance, and investor protection, as well as tokenisation, digital markets, and financial inclusion. It will feature keynotes, regulatory panels, breakout sessions, technical workshops, and networking opportunities. Over 40 speakers from more than 30 countries are expected to participate, with more than 2,000 attendees.

The event aims to facilitate discussions on emerging regulation, share international best practices, explore tokenisation opportunities, and engage directly with regulators and investors.
