Northern Czechia travel guide: Rock cities, forest trails, and Saxon Switzerland
TALY’S TRAVEL: Exploring northern Czechia and Germany’s Saxon Switzerland region.
Northern Czechia offers a unique blend of dramatic landscapes, forest trails, picturesque towns, family attractions, and thermal wellness. Just beyond Prague lies Saxon Switzerland, adding to the region's spectacular viewpoints. Our first two days were spent exploring Prague before venturing north, combining active outdoor adventures with relaxation.
A 48-hour pass to Prague provided access to public transit, historic Tram 42, museums, towers, guided tours, and river cruises, as well as reserved admission to popular attractions. The pass allowed us to explore the city, including the historic tram, key sights, and introductory tours of the Old Town and Jewish Quarter. One of the more unusual experiences was a medieval underground Prague tour, offering a glimpse into life during the Middle Ages.
Other highlights included the beautifully preserved Baroque Library Hall of the Clementinum, the Old City Hall with its unique paternoster elevators, and the guided tour of New City Hall. Driving in Czechia proved straightforward with helpful features like adaptive cruise control and Lane Assist, particularly in our Škoda Kodiaq.
Northern Czechia's rock cities, such as Prachov Rocks, Hrubá Skála Castle, and Adršpach Rock City, showcase dramatic sandstone formations, forests, castles, and natural viewpoints. Adršpach Rock City, featured in The Chronicles of Narnia, offers several hiking routes with unique rock formations and dramatic landscapes. For a different perspective on Krkonoše National Park, the Treetop Walk Krkonoše provides an elevated wooden walkway through the forest and a 43-meter observation tower offering panoramic mountain views.
