Hamilton finds his spark at Sepang but Verstappen denies Ferrari star pole

Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, denying Lewis Hamilton from the front row. The Ferrari driver demonstrated a stellar late lap, setting the pace with a lap time of 1 minute 35.250 seconds, which he further improved on his final run, leaving Hamilton to take second place. Hamilton expressed his satisfaction over team radio, stating, "Great job guys, car felt great!"

This result marked a triumphant return to the top of the grid for Hamilton, whose last front-row start was in Barcelona where he went on to win. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth for Mercedes, but is set to move up to third due to Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, who qualified ahead of him, carrying a five-place penalty.

Hadjar, on the other hand, put up a solid performance, securing his spot in the final shootout. Verstappen dominated the session, topping Q2 with a 1:35.696 before gaining further speed in the final qualifying segment. George Russell faced a tougher final session, unable to match Antonelli's pace, while Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, and Lando Norris also couldn't challenge Verstappen for pole.

The race at Sepang, formerly known as the Bahrain Grand Prix, is part of Formula One's preparations for its inaugural grand prix at Sepang since 2017, with Verstappen now holding the prime starting position.
