A 61-year-old man was hospitalized on Friday evening after his car crashed into a lamppost in Orihuela Costa, Spain. The incident occurred around 7pm on Avenida Cabo de Gata, near its intersection with Calle Cantábrico, in the La Cuerda residential area. The crash took place shortly after a storm that had affected the region since midday had concluded.

For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of his vehicle and crossed onto the central reservation. As a result, the car struck the lamppost, toppling it across the road. The man was the sole occupant of the car. Emergency services responded to the scene, with the Generalitat’s Emergency Coordination Centre dispatching both a Basic Life Support ambulance and a SAMU advanced life support unit.

The driver was transported to Torrevieja University Hospital, though details regarding his condition and injuries have not been disclosed.

The collision inflicted significant damage to the front of the vehicle, tearing off its bumper, shattering a headlight, and exposing portions of the radiator and front structure. Debris from both the car and the fallen lamppost scattered across the roadway. Torrevieja and Orihuela Local Police firefighters responded to the scene, utilizing a circular saw to dismantle the metal lamppost for removal. Police cordoned off the area and managed traffic while emergency personnel tended to the driver and cleared the wreckage.

At the time of the accident, the road surface was wet, but investigators have not determined whether this contributed to the crash.
