YTL launches AI coding push

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL AI Labs has introduced ILMUcode, an advanced AI coding platform aimed at empowering Malaysian developers, students and aspiring software developers with cutting-edge coding abilities via domestically built AI infrastructure. The platform's unveiling took place at Universiti Malaya (UM), where it integrates an agentic AI coding assistant with ILMU-GLM-5.3, the latest model in YTL AI Labs' ILMU series, co-developed with Z.ai.

ILMUcode empowers users to navigate intricate codebases, craft or alter code, troubleshoot issues, and transform concepts into functional software. The platform's debut was marked by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who officiated the event. UM will be the pioneering university in Malaysia to incorporate ILMUcode into its curriculum, granting 800 first-year students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology RM100 monthly credits for three months.

This equates to up to RM300 in credits per student, enabling them to explore, develop, and deploy the platform as the new academic year commences. UM's vice-chancellor, Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, expressed pride in UM becoming the first university in Malaysia to provide computer science students with access to the latest frontier AI coding technology through ILMUcode.

He emphasized that this initiative equips Malaysia's future technology builders and bolsters the nation's AI talent pipeline. YTL AI Labs' CEO, Foong Chee Mun, highlighted that ILMUcode merges Malaysia's AI capabilities with technologies from leading global AI firms, while preserving locally controlled infrastructure. He explained that the platform consolidates Malaysia's own AI prowess with the finest technologies from around the world, enabling the development of YTL AI Labs' proprietary models and partnerships with industry leaders such as Nvidia and Z.ai.

With ILMUcode's launch, Foong stressed that Malaysians will not only have access to frontier AI for consumption but also for creation, contributing to Malaysia's goal of becoming an AI nation. Central to YTL AI Labs' portfolio is its flagship multimodal model, which has achieved top rankings on the MalayMMLU benchmark for the Bahasa Melayu language.

The company's collection also encompasses speech recognition, text-to-speech, and embedding models. Through its collaboration with Nvidia, YTL AI Labs has developed the agentic ILMU-Nemo models, based on Nvidia's open-source Nemotron models, which power ILMUcode. ILMUcode broadens the ILMU family's offerings into AI-assisted software development, thanks to its partnership with Z.ai, granting Malaysian developers access to the GLM-5.3 coding model through locally operated AI infrastructure.

ILMUcode joins YTL AI Labs' expanding lineup of AI solutions, including ILMUclaw, which facilitates the construction of autonomous AI agents, and ILMUchat, a conversational AI platform available on Apple's App Store and Google Play.
