Two Iranians charged over alleged Manchester bomb plot

Two Iranian men, Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, have been charged in connection with an alleged bomb plot against the Jewish community in Manchester, according to Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP). The pair was arrested in Manchester on Sunday, 20 September. CTP alleges that the men were in contact with a third party, possibly in Iran, regarding the plot.

Both Ahmadyan and Salehi arrived in the UK via small boat in 2020 and 2023, respectively. One man has been granted asylum, while the other has an ongoing asylum claim. Both have been remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court. According to CTP, the men are accused of receiving instructions to create a chlorine bomb, acquiring necessary materials and equipment, researching potential targets, and conducting reconnaissance of possible attack locations.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that these incidents highlight the threats posed by terrorists and foreign state actors. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of CTP stated that these are serious charges resulting from a joint investigation with security services, leading to the disruption of a plot targeting Manchester's Jewish community. She reassured the public that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat but urged individuals to remain vigilant and report any concerns to the police.

Mayor Bev Craig of Greater Manchester expressed shock, alarm, and concern within the Jewish community and across the region following the charges. She stressed that this serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats facing Jewish communities in the area.
